How to Do Broken Link Building: My 6-Step Method

This is the broken link building strategy I follow on every order. The technique is simple: find dead pages people still link to, then offer a page that does the job better. All you send is your website and the page you want links to.

01

Order & Brief

Pay for the number of links you want via PayPal, then send your website and the page you want links to. There's no minimum order.

02

Find Dead Pages

Using broken link building tools like Ahrefs and Semrush, I look for pages in your niche that now return a 404 but still have links from other sites. Each of those broken backlinks is a possible opportunity.

03

Check What Was There

I open each dead page in the Wayback Machine to see what it covered, so the page I pitch is a close match and not a loose guess.

04

You Choose the Targets

Within 3 working days you get at least 3 vetted opportunities per link, showing each site's DR, traffic and the page that holds the dead link. You pick which ones I pitch.

05

Outreach

I email each site owner, point out exactly where the dead link is and suggest your page as the replacement, with a polite follow-up if there's no reply.

06

Verify & Report

When a link goes live, I check that it's dofollow and in the page body, then send you the live URL. Most links are live in 14–21 days.

03 · Pricing

Broken Link Building Pricing

One price per live link, no minimum order and no contract. You pay upfront, and any link that isn't live within 30 days of you approving your list is refunded.

Why $149 when agencies charge more? The broken link building services that show a price usually start at about $250 per link, and several won't show a price at all. I work alone, with no account managers to pay for, and every link goes through the same checks.

04 · Red Flags

Broken Link Opportunities I Don't Pitch

A dead link is only worth replacing on a page that still matters. These six patterns rule an opportunity out before it reaches your list.

FLAG 01

A dead link on a dead page

If the page holding the broken link gets no visitors and isn't in Google's index, a new link there has very little to pass on.

FLAG 02

A topic your page can't match

If the dead page covered something your page doesn't, the owner has no reason to make the swap. I only pitch close matches.

FLAG 03

Footers and giant link lists

A dead link in a sitewide footer or a list of 200 resources is rarely worth the outreach. I look for links inside an article's main text.

FLAG 04

Sites that sell links openly

A site with a price list for links publishes for anyone who pays. A link there tells Google very little about your page.

FLAG 05

Domains bought to resell links

Some dead pages sit on domains that changed hands and now exist to sell links. I check a site's history before it goes on your list.

FLAG 06

Search traffic falling fast

A site that lost most of its Google traffic this year was probably hit by an update. A link from it is likely to be worth less every month.

05 · Opportunity Checks

How I Vet Every Broken Link Opportunity

An opportunity that clears the red flags still has to pass all eight of these checks before it goes on your list.

My Opportunity Checklist

A good broken link depends on the page it sits on as much as the website. So I check both, plus the dead page itself.

01

Site Authority (DA/DR)

DA/DR 30 or higher. A useful reference point, but never the only one.

02

Organic Traffic

At least 2,000 organic visits a month, checked in Semrush or Ahrefs.

03

The Link Is Confirmed Dead

The old URL returns a 404 or a dead redirect, confirmed by hand and not only in a tool report.

04

Topic Match

What the dead page covered, checked in the Wayback Machine, lines up with your page.

05

Page Indexed

The page holding the dead link is in Google's index, checked with a site: search.

06

Link in the Body

The dead link sits in the main content, not in a footer, sidebar or comment.

07

Clean Backlink Profile

Spam score and the site's own links are checked for link farms and sudden spikes.

08

The Right Audience

Most visitors come from the countries the site writes for, and traffic is spread across many pages, not one or two.

The final test: would the site's readers be better off clicking your page than hitting a 404? If not, I don't pitch it.

06 · Who It's For

Who My Broken Link Building Service Is For

SaaS and software companies
Blogs and content sites with in-depth guides
Ecommerce brands with buying guides
Agencies and SEO consultants
B2B and professional service businesses
Businesses in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Asia

Broken link building is not the right fit if:

  • your site has no in-depth page to offer, and you don't want one written,
  • you need dozens of links this month, since dead links in any niche are limited,
  • you need a specific anchor text, because owners usually keep the anchor they already have, or
  • your website is in the casino, CBD or adult niche, which I don't accept.

Running an agency? My white label link building service covers broken links too, with reports you can pass to your client, and my guide to reselling link building shows how to price it.

08 · FAQ

Broken Link Building FAQ

In SEO, broken link building means getting a backlink by fixing someone else's dead link. Because your link replaces one that already pointed to your topic, it sits on a relevant page in a natural spot, which is what makes these links worth having.

Yes. You point out a dead link and suggest a page that genuinely covers the same topic, and the site owner decides whether to use it. The risk comes from poor topic matches and low-quality sites, which is why every opportunity is checked before it reaches your list. Google's spam policies explain which link practices to avoid.

A few broken links on your own site won't sink your rankings, but they frustrate visitors, make pages look neglected and can waste crawl time. The bigger loss is backlinks from other sites pointing at your dead pages, because that authority goes nowhere until you restore the page or redirect it.

Say a marketing blog links to a guide on image compression from a tool site that has since shut down. Clicking it now shows a 404 page. That's a broken link, and a site with a current guide on the same topic can offer it as the replacement. The example near the top of this page shows the before and after.

On your own site, update the link to the correct URL, point it to a similar working page, or remove it. If the broken link goes to a page you deleted, a 301 redirect to the closest matching page keeps the value of any backlinks that page had.

Crawl the site with a tool such as Screaming Frog, Ahrefs Site Audit or Semrush Site Audit and filter for 4xx errors. Google Search Console also lists missing pages under Pages, Not found (404). For dead pages that other sites still link to, use the Broken backlinks report in Ahrefs Site Explorer.

$149 per live link here, with no minimum order. If you need a new page to pitch as the replacement, that's $60 for up to 1,200 words, agreed before writing starts. You pay upfront, and any link that doesn't go live is refunded.

You get your opportunity list within 3 working days. After you approve it, most links go live in 14–21 days, depending on how quickly site owners reply. Any link that isn't live within 30 days of your approval is refunded.

Message me on WhatsApp or email with your website and the page you want links to. I'll confirm the price, timeline and whether your niche is a good fit. You pay through PayPal, and I start looking for dead links right away. You'll get your opportunity list within 3 working days.

A new link usually needs a few weeks before Google crawls the page and counts it. Ranking changes tend to show over the following months, and most of my clients see movement after 3 to 5 months of regular link building. It depends on your page, your competition and how many links you build, so no one can promise exact positions.

You don't pay for it. If a link isn't live within 30 days of you approving your list, that link is refunded in full. If you'd rather, I can pitch another opportunity from your list instead.

Not always. If your site already has a page that covers what the dead page did, I pitch that at no extra cost. If not, I can write one for $60 (up to 1,200 words), and you publish it before outreach starts.

Yes. Links are dofollow and placed in the body of the page. If a site owner adds the link as nofollow, you get a replacement or a refund.

If a link is removed within 6 months of going live, tell me. You can choose a replacement or a full refund.

Usually not, and that's normal for this method. The site owner swaps the URL and keeps the anchor text that's already there, which tends to read naturally. If an owner is happy to adjust it, I'll suggest wording close to your topic.

Neither is better in every case. Broken link building gives you a link the site owner already wanted on that topic, but it depends on dead links existing in your niche. Niche edits don't need a dead link, so they're easier to scale. Many campaigns use both. See my niche edit services.

I don't accept casino, CBD or adult websites. For most other niches, including SaaS, tech, ecommerce, finance, health and B2B services, I can find relevant opportunities.

No, and be careful with any service that does. Rankings depend on your content, technical SEO and competition as well as links. I guarantee the work: vetted opportunities you approve, a dofollow link in the page body, and a refund for any link that doesn't go live. My checklist for choosing a link building service covers what else to ask before you pay.
