How Much Does Link Building Cost? The Short Answer

Link building pricing in 2026 usually works out to $70 to $500 per link for outreach links and guest posts on sites with genuine traffic: about $70 to $250 on smaller niche sites and several hundred dollars on stronger ones. Monthly plans from link building companies mostly run from about $1,000 to $10,000. Anything under about $50 a link usually comes from a site that exists to sell links, not one with readers.

Marketplace data puts numbers on that. BuzzStream’s analysis, updated October 20, 2026, puts the average link insertion at $179, and the average guest post at $295 bought straight from the site or $461 through a vendor. PressWhizz looked at 22,703 completed placements and found a median of $112, because cheaper links sell in bigger numbers.

I’m Subham Chowdhury. I’ve worked in SEO since 2014 and sold link building to clients since 2018, so read this knowing I’m a seller too. The prices below are other providers’ published prices, checked on October 23, 2026. Mine are listed separately at the end, on the same terms, so you can compare.

Link building pricing in 2026: cost per link, cost per month and published prices compared

Link Building Cost by Link Type

If you’re asking how much backlinks cost, the first answer is: which kind? The type of link sets most of the price. A profile you create yourself costs cents, while a link from a news story can cost more than a month of outreach. This is what each type costs in 2026:

What each type of link costs in 2026
Link typeTypical costWhat you’re paying for
Foundation links (profiles, listings, Web 2.0 blogs)About 40 cents to $1 per link, bought in packagesSetup work on platforms anyone can join
Link insertion (niche edit)$179 on average, from $20 to $1,500A link added to an article that already exists
Guest post$295 on average bought direct, $461 through a vendorA new article on the site, usually with the writing included
Managed outreach placement$72 to $500, rising with the site’s DRProspecting, outreach and content handled for you
Agency editorial link$300 to $375 per link at Editorial.LinkVetted sites, an account manager, bundle pricing
Digital PR$1,250 to $1,500 per linking siteA story or study that journalists pick up

Sources: BuzzStream for link insertions, guest posts and digital PR; the FATJOE and Respona price pages for managed placements; Editorial.Link pricing; foundation link packages from my foundation links guide.

The table can’t show two things. The same type of link can cost several times more on one site than on another, so a price only means something next to that site’s traffic and topic. And many offers mix types: a monthly plan with 100 links is mostly foundation links, so its cost per link can’t be compared with a guest post. For guest posts on their own, my guide to guest post pricing breaks the cost down by niche.

Published Link Building Prices, Compared

Across seven well-known providers that publish their prices, the cost per link runs from $72 at FATJOE’s entry tier to $500 at Respona’s DR60+ tier, and most plans land in the low-to-mid hundreds. I checked every page on October 23, 2026 and worked out a cost per link wherever the page gave enough to do it.

Published link building prices, checked October 23, 2026
ProviderWhat they sellPublished priceCost per link
FATJOEBlogger outreach, per placement$72 (DR10+) to $456 (DR60+)$72 to $456
ResponaManaged placements, per link$100 (DR20+) to $500 (DR60+)$100 to $500
Get Pro LinksMonthly plans$999 for 10 links to $3,999 for 30About $100 to $133
Editorial.LinkEditorial links, single or bundled$375 per link, $1,750 for 5, $6,000 for 20$300 to $375
LinkBuilder.ioMonthly plans$2,999 for 8 links to $19,999 for 53+About $375 to $385, less if you get more than the minimum
Solvid (UK)Monthly white label plans£2,995 for 10+ links to £13,995 for 60+About £233 to £300, less if you get more than the minimum
uSERPCustom agency engagementsMinimum spend of $5,000 a monthNot published

A “+” after a link count means the plan promises at least that many, so the actual cost per link can be lower. Prices are shown as each provider lists them and may not include VAT or sales tax. They change often, so check each provider’s page before you order.

What the Comparison Shows
  • Authority drives the price at every provider that prices by DR. FATJOE’s DR60+ tier costs more than six times its DR10+ tier.
  • Bigger plans don’t always mean cheaper links. LinkBuilder.io’s cost per link stays near $375 from its smallest plan to its largest. Get Pro Links goes the other way, from about $100 to $133, because its bigger plans add higher-DR sites.
  • Entry tiers set a low bar for traffic. FATJOE’s DR10+ tier lists sites with 0 to 1,000 monthly visits, and Respona’s DR20+ tier lists 100 to 5,000. Ask for the exact site before you pay for the cheapest tier.
  • Agencies that sell strategy often don’t publish a price per link. uSERP publishes a minimum monthly spend instead.

I’ve left my own prices out of this table on purpose. They’re in the last section, with the same details.

Link Building Cost Per Month: What Each Budget Buys

A monthly budget suits most businesses better than buying links one at a time, because rankings usually move over months, not weeks. At the published prices above, a few hundred dollars a month buys a handful of outreach links, and the jump to agency plans starts around $1,000.

What a monthly link building budget usually buys
Monthly budgetWhat it usually buysGood for
Under $100Foundation links, or one placement on a DR10–20 siteA base for a new site, not a competitive keyword
$100 to $5001 to 4 outreach placements on DR20–40 sites, or 1 to 2 guest posts on sites with 5,000+ monthly visitsSmall businesses and local or long-tail keywords
$500 to $1,000About 2 to 6 placements on DR30–50 sites, often a mix of guest posts and niche editsSmall businesses with a few strong competitors
$1,000 to $3,000About 8 to 20 placements through a productized serviceGrowing sites in moderate competition
$3,000 to $5,000About 8 to 30 placements, from an entry agency plan to a larger productized planEstablished sites pushing competitive pages
$5,000 and upAn agency engagement with strategy, content and reportingCompetitive national keywords

The size of the budget matters less than the match between budget and keyword. Before picking a number, check how many sites link to the pages above you. My method for working out how many backlinks you need takes about five minutes, and for many low-competition keywords the answer is fewer than ten.

Give any budget three months before you judge it. My guide on how long backlinks take to work shows what to check at week 4, 8 and 12, so you know whether the money is doing anything.

Per Link, Monthly Retainer or Per Campaign?

  • Per link. You pay for each placement, so you always know what one link costs. It suits testing a provider or buying a few strong links for one page.
  • Monthly retainer. A fixed fee for a set number of links, usually with planning and reporting. It suits ongoing campaigns, but check the contract length before you sign.
  • Per campaign. Common for digital PR, where BuzzStream puts a campaign at $5,000 to $10,000. You pay for the idea and the outreach, and the number of links depends on how many journalists pick the story up.

What You’re Paying For in a Link Building Quote

A link building price pays for five kinds of work, and the site owner’s fee is only one of them.

  1. Finding and checking sites. Most prospects fail on traffic, topic or spam checks. That time is billed somewhere.
  2. Outreach. Contacting owners, agreeing the topic and following up. From first search to a live link, one outreach link takes about 3 to 21 days, as I explain in my manual link building guide.
  3. Content. A full article for a guest post, or the sentence around a niche edit.
  4. The publisher’s fee. Most active blogs now charge an editorial or admin fee.
  5. Reporting and replacements. Checking that every link is live and replacing the ones that disappear.

When a price sits far below the averages above, one of these steps is usually missing, and it’s most often the site checks. A middleman also adds a markup: BuzzStream found that a guest post bought through a vendor costs about $166 more on average than buying it straight from the site, roughly 56% extra. That markup pays for the work in this list, so it’s worth paying only when the work is actually done.

Agency vs Freelancer vs In-House: The True Cost

Agencies usually charge about $2,500 to $10,000 a month, solo specialists often charge about $100 to $400 per link, and in-house link building costs your team’s hours plus tools such as Ahrefs Lite at $129 a month. Each one also has a cost that isn’t on the price list: agencies have contracts, freelancers have limited capacity, and in-house work takes time.

Agency, freelancer or in-house: what each one costs
OptionTypical costHidden costBest for
AgencyPublished retainers run from about $2,500 to $10,000 a month, according to BuzzStream; some plans start near $1,000Contracts: LinkBuilder.io and uSERP both work on six-month termsBigger budgets that want strategy and volume
Freelancer or solo specialistVaries widely; specialists who publish prices, me included, often charge about $100 to $400 per placementCapacity: one person can only run so many campaignsSmall and mid budgets that want to talk to the person doing the work
In-houseYour team’s time, plus tools such as Ahrefs Lite at $129 a monthHours: every pitch takes time, and most get no replyCompanies that need links every month for years

In-house is the hardest to price, so here’s a worked example with numbers you can swap for your own. Finding a site, getting the right contact and writing a personal email takes about 35 to 95 minutes per pitch, based on the task times in my manual link building guide. Say a pitch takes an hour and one in five gets a yes. That’s five hours per live link. At $40 an hour, each link costs $200 of your time before any publisher fee or content, plus $129 a month for a tool like Ahrefs.

Doing it yourself makes sense if your hour is worth less than that, or if you’re building a skill you’ll use for years. Otherwise, you’re paying either way, and the question is only who does the work.

What Makes Link Building Cost More or Less

Organic traffic and authority move the price of a link more than anything else, followed by the niche, who you buy from, what’s included and how fast you need it.

  1. Organic traffic. PressWhizz found that sites with 100,000+ monthly visits sell for roughly 218% more than sites with under 1,000. In BuzzStream’s data, the average link insertion rises from $137 on sites with 0 to 100 visits to $510 on sites with 100,000+.
  2. Authority. Link insertions average $113 on DR 0–9 sites and $461 on DR 80+. For guest posts bought direct, the gap is wider: $132 at DR 0–9 against $1,735 at DR 80+.
  3. Niche. Link insertions averaged $126 in law and government and $345 in sports. Finance, health and SaaS usually cost more than hobby niches, because fewer good sites accept outside articles.
  4. Who you buy from. A vendor adds a markup for the checking, outreach and writing it does for you.
  5. What’s included. Article length, the publisher’s fee, site approval and replacements can each be priced separately.
  6. Turnaround. Respona’s default delivery is 28 days, and faster delivery costs extra. Rushed work also leaves less time to find the right site.

Average Link Cost by Domain Rating

BuzzStream’s October 2026 data shows how price climbs with a site’s DR. Guest posts rise much faster than link insertions, because a new article on a strong site is harder to get than a line added to an old one.

Average cost per link by DR (BuzzStream, updated October 20, 2026)
Site DRLink insertionGuest post (direct)Guest post (vendor)
DR 0–9$113$132$196
DR 10–19$144$175$270
DR 20–29$188$225$353
DR 30–39$246$290$458
DR 40–49$197$384$609
DR 50–59$212$470$759
DR 60–69$296$832$1,289
DR 70–79$411$1,266$1,934
DR 80+$461$1,735$2,983

Averages aren’t perfectly smooth: link insertions on DR 40–49 sites averaged less than on DR 30–39 sites. Use the table to set expectations, then judge each site by its traffic and topic.

What to Get in Writing Before You Pay

Two quotes with the same price can be very different deals. Get the contract length, replacement period, site minimums, approval, content and refund terms in writing before you pay.

How My Link Building Pricing Works

Here are my own prices on the same terms as the table above. Every price is published on this site and confirmed before you pay.

My link building prices, as published on this site
ServicePriceWhat’s included
Monthly plans$50, $149 or $249 a month1 to 4 outreach links on smaller niche sites (DR 15+, 1,000+ monthly visits) plus foundation links and Web 2.0 blogs, for one target URL
Outreach Only$399 a month6 outreach links on niche sites with DR 20+ and 1,000+ monthly organic visits, about $66.50 per link
Guest posts$150, $250 or $399 per postPublisher’s fee, outreach and the article, on sites with 5,000+ monthly visits (10,000+ on Elite)
Niche edits$99, $179 or $299 per linkA link in an indexed article, from DR 30+ and 2,000+ monthly visits
Broken link building$149 per live linkPaid upfront, refunded if the link isn’t live within 30 days
High authority platform links$60, $110 or $200 one-time100, 220 or 450 links on Web 2.0, bookmarking, PDF and profile sites, a dofollow and nofollow mix, added over 2 to 4 weeks
White label (agencies)Monthly plan prices, 10% off from 3 client sites, 15% off from 5The same monthly plans with unbranded reports, for agencies reselling to their own clients

Monthly plans have no contract and can be cancelled anytime. Guest post links have a 12-month replacement guarantee and niche edits have six months. If you’re not satisfied and ask within 7 days of delivery, you get a full refund under my refund policy.

My prices sit at the low end of the comparison because I work alone, with no agency overhead or sales team, and I write the Web 2.0 articles myself. The trade-off is capacity: very large monthly volumes need a quote first.

Where Your Money Goes in My Prices

Publishers charge different fees, even for sites at the same DR. So each package has a fixed budget for the publisher’s fee, and your price stays the same whichever site we use.

How a guest post price is split
PackagePublisher’s feeArticleOutreach, checks and guarantee
Essential, $150 (DA/DR 25–40)$50 to $90$15 to $25About $35 to $85
Advanced, $250 (DA/DR 35–55)$100 to $160$20 to $35About $55 to $130
Elite, $399 (DA/DR 50+)$180 to $280$30 to $45About $75 to $190
How a niche edit price is split
PackagePublisher’s feeOutreach, checks and guarantee
$99 (DA/DR 30+)$40 to $65About $34 to $59
$179 (DA/DR 40+)$80 to $125About $54 to $99
$299 (DA/DR 50+)$150 to $220About $79 to $149

If a site asks for more than the range for your package, I find another site or offer you the next package up. You’re never charged extra after you order. The last column pays for finding and checking sites, my time with each site owner, the live link report and the replacement if a link is removed during the guarantee.

These fees sit below BuzzStream’s averages earlier on this page. Those averages cover all kinds of sites, while I work with niche blogs that have their own readers and deal with each site owner directly, so no vendor markup is added.

As for what a small budget can do: a movie website client ordered two guest posts in mid-August 2026. Organic clicks started rising about four weeks later, from 15.2K to 43K in a later three-month view in Search Console. I explain what that does and doesn’t prove in my guest post pricing guide. If you’d like the full picture, here’s how my manual link building services work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions people ask most about link building costs.

How much does link building cost?

It depends on how you buy. Single placements on published price lists start around $72 on low-DR sites and pass $450 on DR 60+ sites, while agency plans start near $1,000 a month and can run past $10,000. The price comparison above shows seven providers side by side.

How much do links cost?

A single link can cost anything from a few dollars to several thousand. Profiles and listings cost cents each, link insertions in existing articles average a little under $200, and links from digital PR cost $1,250 to $1,500 each. The cost by link type table has the full range.

How much does link building cost per month?

Productized plans start around $1,000 a month for about 10 links, and agencies that include strategy usually start somewhere between $2,500 and $5,000. Small-business plans can cost far less if they combine a few outreach links with supporting links. What matters is whether the monthly spend matches the links your keyword needs.

What is a fair cost per link?

A fair price is one the site’s organic traffic and topic can justify. Compare quotes by the cost per monthly visitor, not by DR, which I explain in how to tell if a guest post price is fair. A cheap link on a site with no readers is often the most expensive option you have.

Why are some backlinks $50 and others $500?

The difference is mostly the site behind the link: its organic traffic, authority and niche. A $500 link usually sits on a site with thousands of readers in your topic, while a $50 link usually sits on a site that publishes anything for a fee. What’s included, such as the article and replacements, also changes the price.

Is it cheaper to do link building yourself?

In cash, yes, because you only pay for tools and any publisher fees. In time, it’s often more expensive: each pitch takes close to an hour, and most get no reply. If your time is worth more than about $40 an hour, paying someone else usually works out cheaper.

Do link building prices include the content?

Often, but not always. FATJOE and Respona include the writing in their placement prices, while many marketplaces list only the publisher’s fee and charge for the article separately. Ask for one total price before you compare quotes.

Is paying for link building against Google’s rules?

Paying a site for a link that passes ranking credit goes against Google’s spam policies, which ask for paid links to be marked rel=“sponsored”. Paying someone for research, writing and outreach is a service, but the line isn’t always clear, so no seller can promise a paid link is risk-free. The risk grows with patterns like irrelevant sites and repeated keyword anchors.

What happens if a link I paid for is removed?

That depends on the provider’s replacement terms, which range from none at all to a lifetime guarantee. FATJOE replaces removed links for life and Get Pro Links for six months. Get the replacement period in writing before you pay.

Is link building worth the cost?

It is when the page you’re building links to is already good and the main gap between you and the top results is links. Compare the monthly cost with what the traffic is worth: 500 visits a month on a keyword that costs $2 a click in Google Ads is worth about $1,000 a month, so a $300 link budget is easy to justify. If the page is thin or doesn’t match what searchers want, fix that first, because links won’t hold it up.

How much should a small business spend on link building?

Most small businesses start with $100 to $1,000 a month, which buys a few outreach links or one or two guest posts on relevant sites. Local businesses in a narrow area often need fewer links than that, while a small online store up against national brands may need the top of that range. Check how many sites link to the pages you want to beat before you pick a number.

The Bottom Line

Link building pricing comes down to the site each link sits on. Expect $70 to $500 for a solid outreach link or guest post, depending on the site, about $1,000 to $10,000 a month for most plans from link building companies, and be wary of anything under about $50 a link. Compare quotes by traffic, relevance and written terms, not by DR or the number of links.

If you’re new to all this, start with what link building is, then work out how many backlinks your keyword needs before you set a budget.
