In SEO, a niche edit is a backlink added to an article that is already published and indexed on another website. Instead of writing a new post, the site owner updates an existing page to include your link, usually inside a sentence or two of new text. 04 · Red Flags
Niche Edit Links I Turn Down
Cheap link insertions tend to go wrong in the same few ways. If an article shows any of these, it never reaches your shortlist.
A site the seller doesn't control
Some sellers place links through hacked logins or old plugins on sites they don't own. Those links get found and removed. I only work with site owners who agree to the edit.
An article unrelated to your page
A link to a SaaS tool inside a recipe post helps no one. The article's topic has to match your target page. A matching site category isn't enough.
A page Google doesn't index
If the article isn't in Google's index, a link there may never count. I check every page with a site: search before you see it.
An article full of paid links
A post already carrying 15 or 20 commercial links has been sold many times over. Your link would be one in a crowd, on a page Google trusts less.
Traffic in a sharp decline
A big drop in organic traffic over the last 6–12 months usually means a Google update hit the site. Links from it tend to lose value too.
A link tucked away from the text
A link in a footer, a sidebar or a list of resources at the bottom isn't a proper niche edit. Your link goes inside the body of the article, where people read.

A strong website can still have a weak page. That's why I check the article itself as well as the domain.
Site Authority (DA/DR)
DA/DR 30+, 40+ or 50+, depending on your tier. A useful reference point, but never the only one.
Real Organic Traffic
At least 2,000, 5,000 or 10,000 organic visits a month by tier, checked in Semrush or Ahrefs.
Where the Traffic Comes From
A site written for US readers should get its visits from the US, not from countries it doesn't write for.
Spam Score & Backlinks
I check the site's own links for spam patterns, link farms and sudden, unnatural growth.
The Article Is Indexed
The exact page your link goes on must be in Google's index. An indexed homepage doesn't prove that.
The Article's Topic
It has to cover something close to your target page, so the link makes sense to the person reading.
Outbound Links on the Page
A page linking out to lots of unrelated commercial sites is a sign it has been sold to many buyers.
Placement in the Body
Your link sits inside a paragraph of the main content, with text written around it.
